Richard Caruso was a correctional officer at Corcoran State Prison in California, where guards allegedly forced inmates into gladiator-style fights that turned deadly. When he exposed what was happening to the FBI, he faced death threats, retaliation, and lost his career. He eventually received a $1.7 million settlement for blowing the whistle.
From Marine to Correctional Officer
Caruso grew up in Hornell, New York, in a large Italian family. His father was a respected community figure, and Caruso admits he often got away with mischief because of his family's reputation. After a minor argument with his father, Caruso spitefully signed up for the Marine Corps at 17, never expecting to actually serve. But recruiters showed up at his door after graduation, and his father called him a coward when he tried to back out. Caruso went to Parris Island and became a military policeman.
After his service, Caruso moved to California during a prison boom in the 1980s and 1990s, when 16 state prisons were built across the Central Valley. He started at Mule Creek State Prison near Sacramento, then transferred to Corcoran in 1989. Corcoran was designed with two halves: general population yards and a Security Housing Unit (SHU) that would house the most violent gang members from prisons across the state.
