“If you robbed a kingpin back then, your life was over. They’re gonna catch you, probably torture some of your family, they gonna find you and they’re gonna kill you. So the plan was from day one, I’m gonna kill this guy.” That is how Stephen McCreary, speaking to host Ian Bick on Locked In, describes the logic that led him to take a life at age 17. Sentenced to life in 1977, McCreary spent 41 years behind bars—including a brief escape in 1988 that involved bribing a deputy warden, a failed passport, and a cross-country flight that ended in capture. His story is not a redemption arc with a clean moral, but a detailed account of how a bright kid from a good Detroit family drifted into the drug trade, committed murder, survived decades of maximum-security prison, and eventually walked free at 58.

Show Notes

Stephen McCreary was sentenced to life in prison for second-degree murder in 1977 after growing up in the dangerous streets of Detroit, surrounded by some of the city's most ruthless killers. While serving his sentence, he offered a deputy warden $10,000 to help lower his security classification, eventually escaping a Michigan prison in December 1987. He spent time on the run in New York and Hawaii before being caught trying to obtain a passport. After his escape, Stephen spent decades in maximum-security prisons, ultimately serving 41 years behind bars. Today, he takes us inside his life of crime, his daring prison escape, surviving some of Michigan's toughest prisons, and what it was like to finally walk free after more than four decades.
