I Got Life in Prison for a Crime I Didn't Commit — 22 Years Later, I Was Exonerated | Sonny Bharadia

AI Summary
5 min readIn November 2001, Sonny Bharadia's car was stolen. He did what anyone would do: he reported it to the police. That decision cost him 23 years of his life. The man who stole his car, Sterling Flint, used it to commit a home invasion and sexual assault. When police traced the license plate, they found Bharadia's name. Even though he had filed a stolen vehicle report a week earlier, and even though the original police description of the perpetrator—an African American male, 150 pounds, with a bushy mustache—matched Flint, not Bharadia (who was 180 pounds, had longer hair, and worked out), Bharadia was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to life without parole. He was 27 years old.

Show Notes
Sandeep "Sonny" Bharadia spent more than 22 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. In 2003, he was convicted of a brutal home invasion and sexual assault in Georgia and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, despite maintaining his innocence and having an alibi placing him more than 250 miles away from the crime. Years later, DNA testing on a pair of gloves worn by the attacker excluded Sonny and matched the very man who had testified against him in court. But even with that evidence, Sonny remained behind bars, fighting a legal system that repeatedly denied him a new trial. After more than two decades of imprisonment, his conviction was finally overturned in 2024, and he was officially exonerated in May 2025.
