Corvain Cooper was handed a life sentence without parole for trafficking marijuana — and he had never been caught with more than a single pound of weed. His two prior convictions: one pound of marijuana and one bottle of cough syrup. Under federal conspiracy and three-strikes laws, that was enough.
From Crack-Scarred Childhood to White-Collar Hustle
Cooper grew up in South Central Los Angeles in the 1980s. His mother was a college graduate and his kindergarten teacher until crack cocaine arrived. His father, who sold drugs, got her hooked on the same product he was pushing. Cooper was six or seven when he watched the transformation happen. "You get to see the power of it," he says. "That's why I only sold marijuana. I would never do that to another family."
He started young, but not with street dealing. In ninth grade, Cooper learned white-collar hustles: counterfeit money, check fraud, and a scheme where he'd buy expensive items with fake bills, then return them for real cash. He got caught stealing from lockers at Hollywood High — he had the master code — and spent seven months in juvenile camp. After that came a fake rim company that turned into a two-year fraud run across California dealerships, then a stint in state prison for forgery.

Show Notes
Corvain Cooper grew up surrounded by the drug game before finding his own way into the streets, starting with fraud before eventually becoming a major player in marijuana trafficking. What began small grew into a massive operation shipping marijuana from California across state lines, until federal authorities took it down and prosecutors tied the conspiracy to more than 35 tons of weed. Corvain was ultimately sentenced to mandatory life in federal prison, where he faced the reality that he might never come home. He shares how the operation grew, what led to his downfall, surviving a life sentence, and the fight for freedom that eventually led to President Donald Trump commuting his sentence in 2021.
