AI Summary
5 min readSamsung just became the most profitable company in the world, recording $58.5 billion in quarterly profit — more than NVIDIA. But almost nobody understands what actually drives that number. The answer is not smartphones or TVs. Roughly 94% of Samsung's profit over the last year and a half has come from a single department: AI memory. And Samsung is not even the leader in that market. Its Korean neighbor, SK Hynix, holds about 60% of the market for the specific kind of memory that powers every AI chip on earth. Together, these two Korean companies control a bottleneck that has turned memory from a commodity into the most profitable hardware business on the planet.
The memory that matters
Every computer needs two things: a workbench and a filing cabinet. The workbench is DRAM — the fast, temporary memory that gets wiped when you turn the machine off. The filing cabinet is NAND flash — slower, cheaper storage that persists. For decades, these were predictable, cyclical markets. Then came high bandwidth memory (HBM), the specialized memory required for AI chips. HBM is built like a skyscraper: 12 to 16 layers of DRAM stacked vertically, connected through an incredibly complex manufacturing process. Every GPU from NVIDIA, every TPU from Google, every AI chip from any hyperscaler needs HBM. And only three companies in the world can make it: Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. Two of

What you'll learn
- 1 (00:00) **Samsung's Record Profit & The Memory Mystery** - Samsung posts a record $58.5B quarterly profit, surprising analysts and surpassing Nvidia, driven almost entirely by AI memory.
- 2 (01:52) **The HBM Bottleneck: Why Memory is the New Oil** - Explains what HBM is and why it's so valuable: every AI chip (Nvidia, Google TPU) needs massive amounts of it, and only three companies supply it.
- 3 (03:43) **The Three Types of Memory: DRAM, NAND, and HBM** - A breakdown of the three memory categories and their roles: DRAM (workbench), NAND (filing cabinet), and HBM (AI memory).
- 4 (05:14) **Why AI is a "Black Hole" for Memory** - Explains the insatiable demand: every AI prompt reads the entire model weights, requiring massive memory, and this demand is growing exponentially.
- 5 (06:40) **The Boom-Bust History & Near-Death of SK Hynix** - Addresses the "bubble" critique by recounting the 2022 memory crash where SK Hynix almost got bought by Micron.
- 6 (07:49) **The Wafer Math: Why Consumer Prices Are Rising** - Explains the production trade-off: 1GB of HBM consumes the factory capacity of 4GB of regular DRAM, squeezing supply for consumer products.
- 7 (09:18) **Insane Margins: 52% for Samsung, 72% for SK Hynix** - Compares profit margins: grocery stores (3%), car makers (7%), Apple (30%), Samsung (52%), SK Hynix (72%).

Show Notes
Samsung’s brain-melting profits are clear evidence of the growing role of memory chips in the AI supply chain, with a focus on DRAM, NAND, and high bandwidth memory.
Today we explore how Samsung and SK Hynix have gained pricing power as HBM demand strains factory capacity and pushes up costs for consumer devices.
We also cover the market reaction to recent earnings, including share declines even after Samsung reported record profits and beat estimates. We look ahead to the limited number of memory suppliers, slow capacity expansion, and the upcoming U.S. listing of SK Hynix.
