The $7 Billion AI Middle Man: Stripe Buys OpenRouter

August 19, 2026

AI Summary

5 min read

In just three months, investors valued OpenRouter at $1.3 billion. This weekend, Stripe agreed to buy it for more than $7 billion—a five-times markup in 90 days for a company doing roughly $140 million in revenue. That is 50 times revenue, which looks outrageous until you consider that Stripe processed $1.9 trillion of volume last year and kept only 0.36% of it. OpenRouter charges 5.5% on everything that flows through. Stripe just bought a take rate 15 times higher than its own in the fastest growing industry on Earth.

What OpenRouter Actually Does

OpenRouter is a platform where you pay one subscription and get access to 400-plus AI models—open models, closed models from Anthropic and OpenAI, Chinese open-source LLMs. The idea is simple: if you have a task or a business to build, you want the cheapest, most cost-efficient way to do it, using the smartest models when it makes sense. But that is confusing. You would need multiple subscriptions, you would need to know which model to use at which time, and models get upgraded constantly. OpenRouter solves that. You type a prompt into a simple chat box, and a smart router on the back end determines which model to use at that moment. It saves people money and gives better answers on average. OpenRouter is processing around 30 trillion tokens a week, 100 trillion tokens per month—up 15x from last year and 5x or 6x in the last six

Show Notes

We discuss two major AI infrastructure moves: Stripe’s reported multibillion-dollar acquisition of OpenRouter, and Cursor’s launch of Origin as a GitHub alternative.

We cover OpenRouter’s model aggregation and routing business, Stripe’s interest in AI payments and agentic microtransactions, and how the deal fits into the growing importance of the middle layer in AI.

We also look at Origin’s focus on code hosting for AI agents and the broader shift toward infrastructure built for high-throughput automation.
