The friend who always cancels is not cruel. They are warm, sincere, and genuinely glad to know you. But the message comes an hour before, sometimes twenty minutes before—something came up, a long apology, a good reason. And you say of course, no problem, and you mean it. But watch what happens underneath the friendliness. The first few times you are disappointed. Then you hold plans more loosely. You make a second quieter plan behind the first one. Eventually, when this person suggests meeting, a small part of you simply does not believe Friday will happen. You have not grown angry. You have just learned through repetition what their word is worth. That is what trust actually is: memory, the quiet summary your mind keeps of a long series of small moments. And it cannot be talked into existence because it was never made of talk.

We are told, constantly, that trusting yourself is a feeling. That confident people simply have more of it, some inner certainty the rest of us lack. And so we try to feel our way into it. We repeat encouraging phrases. We try to believe in ourselves harder. And it does not hold, because it is built on nothing, and some honest part of us knows it is built on nothing.
