Jeff Kaplan's path to becoming one of the most influential game designers in the industry began not in a studio, but in a lonely studio apartment in Pasadena. After earning a master's degree in creative writing from NYU, Kaplan spent three years writing eight hours a day, submitting short stories to literary magazines and collecting over 170 rejection letters in a single year. The process broke him. He fell into a deep depression, drank heavily, and eventually threw all his manuscripts and journals into a dumpster. "It was like throwing in the towel for a boxer," he says. "If there was any element of that sitting around, I'd be tempted to try again."
That moment of surrender opened the door to something else. Kaplan poured his free time into EverQuest, the massively multiplayer online role-playing game that had just launched in 1999. He logged over 6,000 hours in three years, eventually becoming the leader of an "uber guild" called Legacy of Steel on the Nameless server. What he didn't know was that several members of his guild worked at Blizzard Entertainment. After a series of lunches that were actually covert interviews, Kaplan was hired as an associate quest designer on World of Warcraft in 2002. His starting salary was $35,000 a year.
