5 min readThe Agent Era Is Here, and It's Already Changing How OpenAI Builds
Tibo Sottiaux, OpenAI's Head of ChatGPT, spends his days running what he calls "larger and larger teams of agents"—until a model breakthrough lets a single, smarter agent collapse that team back down to one. Then the cycle repeats. "I find myself building larger and larger teams of agents, and then when we have the next breakthrough with models, suddenly it's just like, oh well, a bigger agent can just do all of it and keep everything in memory and learn. And so I kind of shrink the team again." This expansion-and-contraction rhythm, he says, is the natural pattern of working at the frontier of AI capability. And it's a window into where he believes everything is heading.
The End of Configuration Fatigue
Sottiaux is explicit about what he thinks the future looks like: "The majority of actions on the internet will be taken by agents." But the key insight is not just that agents will be everywhere—it's that the way we interact with them will fundamentally change. Right now, users face a model picker, reasoning effort sliders, and decisions about whether to use multi-agent or ultra. Sottiaux calls this "configuration fatigue" and says he wants to get rid of all of it. "I myself even get fatigued with the model picker and the reasoning efforts. You kinda need a PhD in model pickers."

What you'll learn
- 1 (00:00) **The Agent-First Future** - Tibo lays out his core thesis: the majority of internet actions will be taken by agents, and builders need to plan for a 10x improvement in capability within a year.
- 2 (01:22) **Behind the Scenes of a Launch** - A brief, humanizing look at launch-day intensity and how Tibo’s own engineering work has evolved.
- 3 (02:52) **The Expansion and Contraction of Agent Teams** - Tibo visualizes his work as a cycle: building large agent teams, then a model breakthrough collapses them into one powerful agent.
- 4 (04:05) **Dots as the Primary Interface** - The conversation pivots to Dots as the future primary way to interact with AI, merging the functions of Codex and ChatGPT.
- 5 (06:16) **The Radical Transformation of Work** - Tibo predicts that the way we work will continue to change "quite radically," moving beyond the current clunky phase.
- 6 (08:29) **Sci-Fi Inspirations and Building with Community** - Tibo connects the current technology to his sci-fi influences and explains how community feedback is essential to the building process.
- 7 (10:19) **The Twitter Dot and the "Sleeper Hit" Ecosystem** - Tibo reveals he uses a specialized agent for Twitter and explains why the open ecosystem is the most underappreciated part of the launch.

Show Notes
Tibo Sottiaux leads ChatGPT and Codex at OpenAI. Under his stewardship, OpenAI has shipped some of its most consequential consumer launches: Codex, ChatGPT Work, and most recently, the new Dots personal agent platform. He joined me at DevDay, hours after his team launched more than 20 new products, to talk about where things are heading.
We discuss:
1. Dots, OpenAI’s new personal AI assistant
2. Why most actions on the internet will soon be taken by agents
3. Why loops, graphs, and fine-tuning agent workflows are a passing phase
4. Which skills are trending up and down in the AI era
5. How Tibo’s Dot warned him about a production outage five minutes before the launch
6. OpenAI’s approach to AI safety
