Childhood Abuse and Path to First Murder

Born in 1936 in rural Virginia, Lucas endured extreme deprivation: a dirt-floor shack, a mother who prostituted herself in front of him and his legless father (who died of hypothermia outside in 1951), beatings, and siblings scattered to institutions. With an IQ around 87—higher than Gary Ridgway's 75—he dropped out after fifth grade.

At 18, convicted of a dozen burglaries, he served four years but escaped in 1957. Released in 1959, he killed his nagging mother in 1960 during a holiday visit in Michigan, stabbing her after she struck him with a broom. Sentenced to 40 years, he received shock therapy and antidepressants but was paroled after 10 due to overcrowding. Another prison stint followed for attempting to abduct a 15-year-old girl, where he met Ottis Toole, a large, troubled Floridian suspected in other crimes like the murder of John Walsh's son.
