Shloime Dachs: The Unknown Story Finally Told By Jewish Music's Most Familiar Voice

AI Summary
5 min readShloime Dachs was putting on his tefillin on a Friday afternoon in Woodridge, New York when his wife asked him why he was davening early. He thought he was in Brooklyn. That was the first sign of the brain tumor pressing against the base of his skull. By Friday night, Hatzalah had rushed him to Hackensack Medical Center. Doctors found a growth touching his brain and prepared to install a shunt to drain fluid. Then, inexplicably, the follow-up X-ray on Sunday showed nothing. The tumor was gone. By Thursday, Dachs was back on stage singing at Camp Simcha, a bandage still on his hand. He credits the outpouring of Tehillim recited for him around the world. "To Hillem works," he says flatly. "Anyone listening, to Hillem is such a powerful tool."
The childhood that shaped the career
Dachs was singing before he could speak sentences, banging spoons and forks as a toddler. His mother enrolled him in choirs—Silva Zemer Boys Choir, Amuday Shage, Miami Boys Choir, and a stint in Muncie Boys Choir. He sang on 613 Torah Avenue and performed for the Lubavitcher Rebbe twice. Looking back, he sees no trade-off between childhood and music. "Whatever I would have lost, I gained with doing something that I love," he says. He still thanks his mother for that decision.
