In October, two journalism students from a Michigan university, Cole and Dallas, took on an assignment from their instructor, Derek. He had pieced together a strange local legend: a research station on Beaver Island, staffed for nearly two decades, had simply ceased to exist in any official record. No closure, no decommission report, no last known contact. The staff, Derek explained, had stopped functioning like a research team and started functioning like something else—internal conflict, ritualistic behavior, disappearances, and then just forest and silence. "Good reporting begins where convenient explanations end," he told them. Dallas, flipping through the file, called it a horror movie assignment. Cole saw it as the right kind of story: one where the official record trails off and something underneath it hasn't been explained.

The Station and What Was Under It

The station was deep in the woods on the island's north side. The trees were old and close, and the windows were dark and hollow, tracking you as you walked. Inside, the smell was damp wood, rust, and something sharper and organic. The place looked like nobody had planned to leave: chairs pushed back, papers on shelves, a coat still hanging. It had a quality, Dallas said, of being "occupied. Not by people. I just mean. It feels like it."
