Tommy Owens took the seasonal caretaker job at a remote cabin in Minnesota's Boundary Waters because he needed solitude. A clean slate. The cabin sat on a granite rise above Knife Lake, accessible only by canoe, with a wood stove, a bunk, and a radio that connected him to dispatch at 4:00 PM sharp every afternoon. His outfitter, a woman named Julie Sanders, showed him the ropes with practiced competence—tightening hinges, checking radio batteries, her hands steady and economical.
