On a cold October night, a long-haul trucker named Mike is driving west on Highway 50, the "Loneliest Road in America," when his daughter Lexi calls. She needs the rest of her tuition paid by November first or her spring registration will be canceled. Mike tells her the next two runs will cover it, though he has already postponed the payment twice. He is driving someone else's truck now—his own rig was lost in bankruptcy, along with most of what he had after two divorces. The company pays nearly double for these overnight stretches between Fallon, Austin, Eureka, and Ely, which makes the arrangement feel reasonable, even if Lexi worries the truck isn't safe.

The Card on the Visor

During his first week on the overnight runs, a dispatcher named Mario handed Mike a laminated card and told him to keep it where he could read it without taking his eyes off the road. Mike assumed it was standard procedure about missing seals and shifting cargo. But the card contains a single instruction printed in block letters: "If headlights catch a stalled car with hazards blinking, do not stop, slow, or look at the driver. Radio the mile marker and continue." Mike never expected to need it.
