I Work the Summer Night Shift at a Ski Resort. We Have Strange Rules.

In July, Logan Black was two payments behind on his truck and desperate for work. The only callback he got was for a summer night watchman position at a Colorado ski resort that was closed for the season. The ad had one unusual requirement: "Must follow site rules exactly." When he arrived at the empty peak eight base lodge, the manager Cheryl Matthews handed him a laminated sheet of nine rules and made him initial every line. Rule one: never ride the chairlift after dark. Rule two: do not watch skiers on the slopes. Rule three: count the 214 pairs of rental skis at two o'clock — if there are 215, lock the shop until sunrise; if there are 213, call Cheryl. Rule four: if the lift runs on its own, go inside and do not touch the controls. Rule five: do not answer the phone between one and four in the morning. Rule six: the boot room light stays on all night. Rule seven: if you hear ski boots on the upstairs deck, do not go up. Rule eight: never take anything handed to you from a chair. Rule nine: your shift ends at sunrise — not at a clock time, but when the sun clears the ridge and hits the lodge roof. Logan initialed them all, though his handwriting got small and cramped on rules one and eight.
