At 9:15 on a Tuesday morning, physicist Craig Wheeler noticed the quiet. He works in an underground research facility owned by Meridian Applied Sciences, a place so secretive that nobody can say who pays Meridian, and the guards—called "tactical teams"—carry themselves like soldiers. The lab sits far from civilization, and the staff have been sealed inside for eight months, studying the effect of an exotic particle on normal matter. The rest is classified. That morning, Wheeler's mentor, Dr. Walter Farley, was missing. His desk was dark, his chair pushed in—uncharacteristically neat—and his jacket still hung in his locker. Farley is never late. Wheeler began searching.

The Tunnel and the Thing in It

Wheeler checked the access logs. Farley's last badge scan was at 8:32 p.m. the night before, at a door in a lower-level storage corridor—a place nobody has a reason to go. After that, nothing. No scan out, no camera footage of him leaving. The tactical team confirmed it: "He goes in, doesn't come out." Wheeler remembered something Farley had mentioned weeks ago: a sealed maintenance tunnel behind the facility, shown on an old map that didn't quite match what had been built. A hidden section. Wheeler took a flashlight and went down alone.
