In the final months before a condemned Detroit department store was scheduled for demolition, a man named Eugene took a salvage job stripping copper from Hartwells. The building was nine stories of broken windows and collapsed sections, and two crews had already walked off the job. The pay was double scale. Eugene’s mortgage was six weeks behind, his son Leonard had an overdue medical bill, and his daughter Angela needed things for school. He took the work.

The job came with a condition. Tim, the man who hired him, gave a single rule about the fourth floor, where the old bridal department was located. A full-length mirror was bolted to a support column up there. Eugene was told to keep his back to it at all times. Never face it. Never clean it. If the mirror showed his reflection doing something before he did—even half a second ahead—he was supposed to leave immediately. No going back for tools. No going back for his truck.

Eugene signed the waiver and went inside.
