I Took a Night Job on an Offshore Rig. The Rules Were Strange.

The narrator got the job through a placement agency—night maintenance on an offshore platform, remote and quiet, exactly what he wanted. The rates were good, accommodation included. But when he showed up at the office, the woman at the front desk took one look at him and went to get the supervisor without a word. The supervisor handed him a sealed white envelope. "Read it," he said. "Follow what it says. Don't ask about it." When the narrator tried to ask a clarifying question, the supervisor just looked at him. He took the envelope.

The Rule

The helicopter ride out to the platform was short. From the air, the rig looked manageable. Up close, it felt enormous in a way that didn't quite add up—pipes and catwalks running in every direction, some disappearing around corners into sections he couldn't account for. The water below was black and oil-slicked. The whole structure hummed through the soles of his boots, a constant vibration he got used to faster than expected.
