Aiden Farley moved his wife and young daughter to the small town of Kenai, Alaska, with a plan: open a bookstore using money from his father's life insurance. The town welcomed them immediately. She told him to leave it shut. When he tried the key anyway, she appeared and took it from him for "safekeeping." Mackenzie touched the doorframe and found a line of frost on a warm day. That night, Melvin came back alone. He told Aiden the building had once been a mission, and that several priests had left suddenly after parishioners reported hearing voices under the floor—voices of dead relatives. "If you ever hear a voice that comes from below that door," Melvin said, "do not answer it."
