The Secret Behind the Midnight Calls

A fifteen-year-old boy lies awake at 2:17 AM, watching his father grab a tool belt, flashlight, and—oddly—a shovel before rushing out the door for what he claims is an emergency electrical repair. This is the third such call in two weeks. When Thomas asks his mother why an electrician needs a shovel, she offers a thin explanation about underground wiring. But Thomas has known his parents his whole life, and he can tell when they're hiding something.

The pattern becomes impossible to ignore. His father returns from these jobs looking not just tired but shaken, with dirt caked under his fingernails and mud on his arms. He showers obsessively, washes his clothes immediately, and avoids eye contact. The calls grow more frequent. A mysterious duffel bag appears. And then Thomas hears his father mention Harold Rogers from the hardware store helping with a job—which makes no sense for routine electrical work.
