The tower sat on a butte surrounded by a fire break—a wide ring of blackened, barren ground where nothing grew. Floyd noticed this early on but chalked it up to the burn being too hot. The isolation was severe: no cell service, a radio that only worked during daylight, and a forty-minute drive to the nearest paved road.

The Ranger and the Notebook

District Ranger Wesley visited regularly, always during the day, always with a pleasant smile and supplies. He asked the same question every time: "Does the door lock from the inside?" Floyd thought it was a standard safety check. But when he found Kyle's spiral notebook, he read something different. Kyle had written about a tall, lean figure that appeared at the tree line at night—always after Wesley's visits. The figure never crossed the burned ground.
