A Stranger Offered Me a Tow During a Blizzard. It Wasn't a Rescue.

Scott Webb, a village maintenance mechanic in rural Alaska, was hauling a seventy-pound generator fuel pump to Chignik Lake when the storm hit. He had three rules taped to his dashboard: stay in the cab during a whiteout, conserve heat, wait for Claire on the radio. He'd written them himself, taped them beside the compass. He knew that improvisation gets people killed. The rules were supposed to be enough.

The snow came sideways, hard pellets that sounded like sand on the windshield. Claire's voice crackled over the radio once, warning him to turn back or shelter in place. Then the radio went dead. The truck hit something in the road, and when he got out to check, diesel was pouring from a split fuel line. He clamped it shut, but he'd already lost too much to make it anywhere. He climbed back into the cab, the heater still running, and tried the radio again. Nothing.

Then the radio spoke again, but the voice wasn't coming from the dash. It was coming from outside, from somewhere in the swirling snow beyond the hood. Scott, leave the cab now. He gripped the steering wheel and stayed put. A prepared man doesn't walk into a blizzard because a dead radio talks.
