“I have set up this strange garden,” Ghita Nørby says, gesturing around her. “Because in nature there is not much that is square. The rose beds are up in the towers or in the burrows. They are always alive in their form. They are not locked.” She is speaking with Mårten Messersmith in the first part of a summer special recorded at her home, a quieter counterpart to their conversation a year earlier at the Royal Theatre. Where that interview was marked by the host’s nervous reverence, this one unfolds in Nørby’s rose garden, and the setting itself becomes a metaphor for how she approaches life: curved, unclosed, and deeply personal.

Curiosity as an infinite opening

The conversation begins with a piece of advice Nørby once received from the director Erlings Grøder. He told her to think when she walks through a door — to do it as if in a close-up. “Many walk through a door and out of a door without thinking,” she explains. “Then they are gone. Or grey. But the people who think, they are there with the same. Big difference.” Messersmith, who had been carrying this advice since their last talk, offers his own version: a young man named Michael Bertelsen once told him, “No matter what you do, remember what you’re curious about.” Nørby lights up. “Curiosity is infinite. It always opens up. It’s not a closed word.”
