Frisør Gun‑Britt: Nogle drømme må man bære alene

Gun-Britt was 13 years old when she walked into a salon in Aalborg to ask for an apprenticeship. The owner thought it was her mother who wanted the job. That early moment—being seen as too young, too small, too improbable—set a pattern she would follow for the next five decades. Now 75, she still runs her 500-square-meter salon in Copenhagen and is approaching 50 years as an independent business owner. She has no plans to stop. "The day I don't think it's funny anymore, then I leave," she says. That day has not arrived.

A craft driven by design, not by habit

Gun-Britt insists that hairdressing is not a service trade—it is a design discipline. "Our subject is completely about design," she says. "It goes so strong in that industry. If you want to be at the top, it's something with having education all the time." Collections change every six months, but the real technical development happens every three months. She compares building skill over a career to stacking Lego blocks: each new technique sits on top of everything that came before. After 50 years, she says she can remember every haircut she has ever made, the way Per Kirkeby could remember every painting.
