5 min readIn 2019, astrologer Aliza Kelly was on the podcast Morbid to examine the Salem Witch Trials through a birth chart lens. She came with a stack of two hundred charts — one for every trial, every person, every instance. The following year, she did the same for Jack the Ripper. In those charts, she found something that still gives her goosebumps: a rare conjunction of Neptune (illusion, delusion, mist) and Pluto (death, transformation, long generational cycles) that had not occurred since. At the time of the murders, London was famously shrouded in fog. “There are no coincidences,” she says. That conjunction, she notes, is one reason we still do not know who Jack the Ripper was — the astrological signature of a mystery that refuses to resolve.
Astrology as an Interpretive Art, Not a Science
Kelly defines astrology as “the interpretive language of the natural elements and celestial forces and planets and constellations and intergalactic objects as how they relate to us here on planet Earth.” She is careful to distinguish her practice from pseudoscience — not because it is a debatable science, but because she does not consider it a science at all. “I think it's an art form,” she says. “It's a symbolic and interpretive and poetic language to better understand yourself and how you relate to the world around you.”
