The Book of Job opens with a man who is “perfect and upright,” wealthy beyond imagination, and so devout that he offers sacrifices on behalf of his children just in case they might have sinned. In six verses, he loses everything: seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred donkeys, and all ten of his children in a single day. The next forty-two chapters wrestle with what happens in those six verses. Dr. Marcus Martins, who has spent decades returning to Job during his own seasons of intense suffering, says the book is not primarily about patience. It is about hope. “Better days always come,” he says. “And strive to be righteous, even when they’re not quite making it for their striving. Better days will always come.”
The Companion in Suffering
Martins describes Job as “my companion.” He first quoted Job at his own father’s funeral in 2005. Both his mother-in-law and his father died suddenly within nine days of each other, neither one ill. Standing at the funeral, he repeated Job’s words: “The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” He says he had to “muster every little bit, every little ounce of faith that I have” to say those words. But they gave him a foothold.
