5 min readHow to Be Less Lonely with Liz Moody
You might be the loneliest you've ever been and have no idea why. The host of Financial Feminist and returning guest Liz Moody argue that the problem isn't that you don't know enough people. It's that you've lost the ability to sit in the discomfort that real connection requires.
Loneliness is a discomfort problem, not an exposure problem
Most friendship advice stops at "put yourself out there." Go to a yoga class, join a book club, be around people. But that advice misses the harder part. Moody draws on the "mere exposure effect"—research showing that the more you're exposed to someone, the more you'll like them, even unconsciously. That gets you in the door. What it doesn't do is get you through it.
The real barrier is what Moody calls the "creation era" of friendship. Before you get to the "cozy era" where you can sit in comfortable silence with someone, you have to endure awkward pauses, uncertain jokes, the fear of being judged. "Creating deep relationships requires friction," Moody says. And modern life is designed to eliminate friction everywhere else—two-day shipping, Uber Eats, instant answers from Google. "We have not worked our muscle of sitting in discomfort," she says. So when friendship asks us to sit in it, we retreat to our phones.

Show Notes
You might be the loneliest you've ever been — and have no idea why. One of my favorite guests and favorite humans, Liz Moody, is back on the show to talk about why loneliness isn't an exposure problem. It's not about being around more people. It's a discomfort problem. We're getting into why our frictionless, optimized lives are quietly killing our ability to connect, what it actually takes to build real friendships from scratch, why vulnerability is the shortcut nobody wants to take, and the one shift you can make this week that will move you toward deeper connection — no new plans required.
