Anthropic launched Sonnet 5, and it is probably the most practical release of the week for most users. Benchmarks show it performing close to Opus 4.8 — roughly 63% on some measures versus Opus's 69% — at a significantly lower cost. On the API, it starts at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens during a promotional period, then goes to $3 and $15. That is Opus-level agentic performance at Sonnet pricing.

The model has a 1 million token context window, 128,000 output tokens, adaptive thinking on by default, and a new tokenizer. Crucially, it is available even on Anthropic's free plan, which matters because many people — including Fortune 500 executives, according to host Jordan Wilson — test AI on free accounts and get misleading results. Sonnet 5 is now the default free model, and it is genuinely good.
