Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5: Capability Leap With Unprecedented Restrictions

Anthropic shipped the most powerful public Claude model yet—Fable 5, from the new Mythos family—alongside the full Mythos 5 for select partners. Stripe used the family of models to migrate a 50-million-line codebase in a single day, work that would normally take a team roughly two months. But the launch comes with four new bottlenecks that no frontier model has imposed before: gated access, invisible downgrades, mandatory data retention, and subscription access ending in under three weeks.

What the Models Actually Do

Fable 5 is the public-facing version of Mythos 5, with additional guardrails. Mythos 5 itself is available only through Anthropic’s Project Glasswing, an invitation-only trusted access program. Both models are priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens—more than double the cost of Opus 4.8, and roughly in line with OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 Pro, the most expensive model on the market.
