The AI Race in 2026: It's Not About the Best Model

In March 2026, the AI landscape looks fundamentally different than it did three years ago. The chatbot era is over. What matters now is not which company builds the smartest model, but which one can turn that intelligence into workflows that actually do work—agentic systems that bring in a company's data and deliver enterprise-ready outputs. As the host of the Everyday AI Podcast puts it, "Whoever makes it easiest is gonna be the one that wins the AI race."

OpenAI remains the consumer default by a wide margin, with 900 million weekly active users and $25 billion in annualized revenue. ChatGPT has become synonymous with AI itself. But the company is also the enterprise default, having converted millions of individual users onto business plans. Their newest model, GPT-5.4 thinking, leads most benchmarks and achieves an 83% win/tie rate against expert humans in blind tests. The trade-off: OpenAI doesn't seem to care about near-term profitability, projecting they may not break even until 2030. They're spending more than anyone else on compute—reportedly targeting $600 billion in total compute spend through 2030—and their enterprise seats can run $50–70 per user.
