In the summer of 2024, a TikTok account called @JBStarMax started posting daily videos of a man in his thirties attempting to learn a dance move that peaked in popularity around 2010: the Dougie. The man, JB Star, was stiff, uncoordinated, and visibly struggling. Commenters immediately accused him of faking it for engagement—rage bait, they called it. But then he kept posting. Day 20, day 45, day 85. And slowly, almost imperceptibly, he got better. The internet had to decide: was this a genuine journey of self-improvement, or a long con?

The Dougie and the Skepticism Problem

The Dougie, as the hosts explain, is a dance named after the rapper Doug E. Fresh, characterized by a signature move where you run your hands over your head and dip your shoulders. It exploded into mainstream culture in 2010 with Cali Swag District’s song “Teach Me How to Dougie.” When most people think of the dance, they associate it with that specific moment. So when JB Star started his challenge in 2024, he was attempting something that felt both nostalgic and oddly specific.

Show Notes

Long before TikTok dances, there was the Dougie.

In 2010, Cali Swag District’s “Teach Me How to Dougie” went worldwide, and for the decade-plus since, people have been trying to learn the viral moves.

More than 15 years later, a Korean TikTok creator went viral for doing the Dougie… badly. He claimed to be learning how to do the Dougie day-by-day – but his moves were so stiff and awkward, viewers from around the world – including Endless Thread producer Kalyani Saxena — were suspicious. Was @JBStarMax faking being bad at the Dougie? Kalyani presents her investigation to Ben and Amory.
