385. Saint Patrick: Slave, Rebel, & Ireland’s Patron Saint (Ep 3)

In his opening remarks, historian Davy O'Cronin tells his students that "almost everything they'd ever heard or read about St. Patrick was wrong." That includes the traditional date of 432 AD for Patrick's arrival in Ireland, the image of Patrick as a triumphant, druid-smashing superhero, and the idea that Patrick single-handedly brought Christianity to a pagan island. The real Patrick, O'Cronin argues, was a traumatized former slave from Roman Britain who wrote two surviving letters that reveal a vulnerable, often powerless man. The heroic Patrick of legend is largely a fabrication, assembled centuries later by the Church of Armagh to bolster its political claims.

Ireland Before Patrick: Not a Closed World

The Ireland Patrick entered was not the isolated, primitive island often imagined. The Roman Empire never conquered Ireland—Agricola considered it and "somebody obviously told him about the weather"—so the island lacked Roman roads, administration, and Latin literacy. But it was not hermetically sealed. There was constant trade and movement across the Irish Sea, and Irish colonies existed in Devon, Cornwall, and Wales. Politically, Ireland was fragmented into as many as 150 small kingdoms, each with its own king. This decentralized structure would later shape Irish Christianity in unexpected ways.
