AI Summary

The term TESCREAL sounds like an acronym designed by committee, but according to researcher Emil Torres, it is the key to understanding why the most powerful AI labs in the world behave the way they do. Torres, a former insider who spent a decade inside these movements before defecting, argues that the dominant frontier AI companies—OpenAI and Anthropic—are not primarily driven by profit or technological progress. They are driven by a fringe ideological bundle that aims to replace biological humanity with digital post-humans, and this goal justifies nearly any action along the way.
The TESCREAL Bundle: Seven Ideologies, One Vision
Torres coined the term TESCREAL alongside computer scientist Timnit Gebru to capture the seven interconnected ideologies that have shaped Silicon Valley's AI race: Transhumanism, Extropianism, Singularitarianism, Cosmism, Rationalism, Effective Altruism, and Longtermism. These movements emerged chronologically over the past 40 years, beginning with libertarian transhumanism in the 1980s and evolving through rationalist and effective altruist communities in the 2000s.
