A Weighted Sleeping Bag

In 2016 or 2017, a teenager identified online as Robert was completing a geography assignment on river bedload in Durham, England. While wading in an obscure stretch of river, he located a heavy object that proved to be bricks packed inside a sleeping bag. The bag had rested long enough for sediment to accumulate, and Robert concluded the bricks had been added deliberately to keep it submerged. When he called his teacher over and began to pull the bag ashore, the instructor ordered him to drop it and threatened suspension if he opened it. Robert complied. Years later he still wondered what the bag contained, noting that any remains inside would likely have been skeletal and that reporting the find would have required extended police involvement on a school trip.
