5 min readJoel Salatin told Brandon a story that stopped him mid-sentence. A man who had read all of Salatin’s books, who lived twenty miles away and spoke the same language, built a farm he thought embodied everything Salatin taught. When Salatin visited, the farm looked nothing like what he had written. “He thought he had adhered and he had actually veered and opposite and opposed,” Salatin said. The experience forced him to reckon with a humbling possibility: if a contemporary neighbor could misread him that badly, how much more must he be misreading ancient texts written in different languages to different cultures? That moment of humility became the thread connecting everything else he had to say about farming, politics, and what is wrong with modern life.
The trap of political focus
Salatin does not expect much from national politics. He thinks Trump has burned through his political equity and predicts Republicans will “get shellacked at the midterms,” followed by two years of impeachments. His deeper concern is that Americans have been conditioned to believe the government is the most trustworthy institution in society — more trustworthy than churches, businesses, or farms. COVID showed him how quickly people swallow official narratives.
