The conversation begins with a discussion of map projections—specifically the Mercator and Gall-Peters projections—and the recent UN adoption of the Equal Earth projection. The hosts use this as a springboard to argue for the value of globes in the home, which offer a truer representation of the Earth and provoke natural curiosity about seasons, geography, and the cosmos. This leads to a broader critique of how curated digital media replaces direct experience, turning people from producers and experiencers into passive consumers and eroding the ability to think critically about the real world.
The Ratchet Effect: How Tolerable First Steps Lead to Dystopia
The central framework of the episode is the idea that many social and political processes are inherently self-exacerbating. A first step that is morally tolerable or even positive inevitably leads, through a ratchet effect with no natural negative feedback, to a place that is horrifying. The hosts argue that humans are incapable of drawing and holding a stable line once a process is set in motion, because power begets power and complexity prevents simple correction.

- 2 (14:00) **Map Projections: Mercator, Gall-Peters, and the UN's New Choice** - Heather explains the mathematical impossibility of perfect 2D world maps and the UN's recent adoption of a new projection.
- 3 (24:09) **Why Every Home Should Have a Globe** - Bret and Heather argue that globes offer an irreplaceable, truthful perspective on geography that 2D maps and digital tools cannot replicate.
- 4 (33:51) **The Hidden War on the West and the Fear of Being Called Racist** - Bret introduces his core concern: the West is under an unrecognized invasion, and the fear of racism accusations prevents people from seeing it.
- 5 (38:09) **The Slippery Slope as a Complex System Phenomenon** - Bret presents his first major thesis: many processes start innocuously but inevitably ratchet toward dystopia due to self-exacerbating dynamics in complex systems.
- 6 (59:53) **End User License Agreements and Secularism as First Steps** - Bret continues his list of processes that start reasonable and end absurd.

Show Notes
On this, our 348th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss migration, race, and the West. First: the Mercator projection is unsatisfactory, and there’s a new map available, but no map of the globe can be perfect. Every home should have a globe. Then: what do we do with things in which the first step is neutral or good, but it seems inevitable that we end up in a dire situation once the first step has been accepted? Examples include abortion, lobbying, advertising, informed consent, EULAs, and utopianism. Another example may be racism: we should not be racist, but we should retain our ability to see difference, and note when people who are showing up on our doorstep are not interested in collaboration, or in the experiment of the West.
