Is Cell Phone Radiation Good For You? The 317th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

The $30 million government study was straightforward in design: 1,679 mice and rats lived in specially designed enclosures that scattered radiofrequency signals uniformly, giving every animal a consistent whole-body dose of radiation at levels 10 to 100 times higher than what AirPods emit. For two years, the animals were exposed nine hours a day to the same frequencies used by cell phones and Bluetooth. The result was not what anyone expected. The radiated mice lived significantly longer—53% lower risk of death—than the control animals that received no radiation. The rats showed the same pattern. The thread on X that brought this to Bret Weinstein's attention concluded: "If this was a pill, I'd be buying."

What you'll learn
- 1 (00:04) **Opening Banter and Third Rails** - Bret and Heather discuss the difficulty of speaking publicly on controversial topics, the vitriol and the private support that follows, and the importance of not being silenced.
- 2 (05:31) **Whale Sightings and a Good Day** - Bret recounts seeing a pod of orcas on the ferry, which he takes as a good omen and a reminder of the natural world.
- 3 (09:38) **Preview of Today's Topics** - Heather outlines the three main segments for the episode: cell phone radiation and mice, the Ninth Circuit decision on a Korean women's spa, and a phylogenetic finding about sharks.
- 4 (11:14) **Sponsor Segment: CrowdHealth, Toops, and Puri** - Three sponsor reads for CrowdHealth (healthcare cost-sharing), Toops (skincare), and Puri (supplements).
- 5 (25:13) **Cell Phone Radiation Study: The Paradox** - Bret introduces a 2018 government study on mice and rats exposed to cell phone radiation, which found that the radiated animals lived longer and had health improvements.
- 6 (33:14) **Non-Ionizing Radiation and Thermal Effects** - Bret explains the difference between ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, and the poorly understood thermal effects of non-ionizing radiation on tissues.
- 7 (41:23) **The Hormesis Hypothesis and a Deeper Explanation** - Bret introduces the concept of hormesis (a little bit of a toxin being beneficial) as a possible explanation for the mice living longer, but offers a more specific, alarming alternative.

Show Notes
On this, our 317th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss radiation and its impact on (rodent) health, and the 9th circuit’s decision to let men use women’s spas. First: research published in 2018 finds that low levels of non-ionizing radiation—like that emitted by cell phones and air pods—are actually associated with life extension in mice and rats. Don’t get too excited—these are the same rodents whose breeding protocols have broken them in some counter-intuitive ways, including that low doses of toxins or radiation can actually slow down the cancer that will otherwise kill them. Then: Olympus Spa, a traditional Korean nude spa for women in the Seattle area, was told by the state of Washington, now upheld by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, that they must let men in, so long as those men think they’re women. Judge VanDyke’s dissent correctly summarizes the issue as one of “swinging dicks.”
