Rejecting the Self-Made Man Ideal

Harvey recounts discovering a statue in Robb Report magazine, a publication he read to observe affluent lifestyles despite lacking the means himself. The bronze sculpture, titled "Self-Made Man," depicts a muscular figure emerging from a block of stone, chisel and hammer in hand, having carved himself free from the waist up. For years, he aspired to own a large home and place the statue in his backyard as a symbol of his achievements. However, after reaching significant success, he no longer wants it. The statue now represents an outdated, inaccurate view of accomplishment.

Recognizing Help from God and Others

On his journey, Harvey realized there is no such thing as a truly self-made person. God places unlikely people in our paths at unexpected times to provide essential help. These encounters benefit us in ways we could not achieve alone. He emphasizes that success involves interdependence, not solitary effort. The statue's creator captured human striving, but Harvey sees it as incomplete without acknowledging divine orchestration and human connections.
