"Can you imagine being who you used to be?"

On the final break of a Friday episode, Steve Harvey's co-host Junior asked him a deceptively simple question: was he chasing peace? Harvey's answer turned into a raw, unplanned meditation on growth, memory, and the people we used to be.

Harvey's first response was a kind of deflection through humor, but then he landed on something real. "Can you imagine being who you used to be?" he asked. "If he resurfaced or she resurface today and drop them in the exact set of circumstance that you are in now and let them take over, you would lose everything. All of it."

That line became the episode's organizing idea: the old self is not a nostalgic artifact but a genuine threat to everything the present self has built. Harvey was not speaking abstractly. He was describing a version of himself that still exists in other people's memories and, if he is honest, still leaves traces in his own behavior.

The sandwich and the throat

Harvey told a story about old friends from Cleveland who drove down to visit him at his mentoring camp. They brought him a half of a famous corned beef sandwich from Slyman's, a Cleveland institution. They sat on the porch of the lodge in rocking chairs and started doing what old friends do: "Remember that time?"
