Jeremy Semidi built his first computer virus at sixteen, not for malice but for education. The Industry Is Looking Inward—And That’s the Problem

Semidi’s central claim is blunt: the cybersecurity industry is obsessed with what happens inside the organization, while the real action is happening outside. Firewalls, EDR tools, and email security all watch for something already inside the network. “Once anything is in your organization, it’s already too late,” he says. The detect-and-respond mentality, he argues, is a holdover from the 1990s. It assumes you brace for attack and then clean up. But today, threat actors build their campaigns in plain sight—on dark web forums, Telegram channels, Discord servers—before they ever touch a target’s perimeter.
