Shakeup In Courtroom

The jury had been dismissed early two days in a row. On Thursday morning, court was barely in session before it ground to a halt again. A panic rippled through the courtroom. Witnesses weren't finished. The judge was questioning jurors individually at the bench. No one knew why. This was week four of the Lindsey Clancy trial in Massachusetts, and the case that had already gripped public attention was taking an unexpected turn.

Lindsey Clancy admitted to strangling her three children—Cora, five; Dawson, three; and Callon, eight months—in January 2023. The central question before the court: was she in a postpartum psychosis episode at the time, or was she a cold-blooded killer? The jury was not considering any other person as responsible for the deaths.

The Chaplain's Testimony

Before the courtroom chaos, one witness had taken the stand: the hospital chaplain who spoke with Lindsey Clancy days after the murders and after Lindsey's own suicide attempt. The chaplain described their first conversation. "We had been praying together," she testified. "And so when I went in on Tuesday the 31st, she said to me as I held her hand to comfort her, 'I am so glad my children are safe.'"

The chaplain replied theologically: "Lindsey, your children are safe. They're safe in heaven with God."
