AI Summary
5 min readAlex Colville is not the most famous name in longevity, but he might be one of the most influential. As a general partner at Age One, a venture capital firm, and a PhD in genetics from Stanford, he functions as a quiet, even-keeled reality check for a field that often runs on hype. In this conversation, he lays out what is real, what is overblown, and what is genuinely on the horizon for aging science—while taking almost nothing himself.
The "Switzerland of Aging"
Colville’s interest in aging began in an unlikely place: Maine, the oldest state in the country by median age. Growing up surrounded by people whose quality of life was visibly reduced by aging, he was struck by the collective complacency. "The villain is the vibes of most people just being like, 'Oh yeah, decline with age is natural,'" he says. This frustration drove him to study the root causes of aging rather than just treating its symptoms.

Show Notes
Over the past five years, Alex Colville has become one of the most influential figures in the longevity and aging fields.
There’s a decent chance you have not heard of him, which is a bit by design. Unlike many longevity gurus, Colville does not seek much attention and, for the most part, operates in the background where he’s been doling out many millions of dollars in investments. Today, Colville runs age1, a venture capital firm that has backed the likes of Loyal, Science, Conception and a bunch of other companies listed as “Stealth” on its web site.
Colville is the guy I call to reality check whatever is being hyped up in Longevity Land. He studies the actual science. He reaches sober conclusions. He’s honest about where the technology is today and what might show promise in the future.
In this episode, we get into Colville’s takes on GLP-1s, partial cell reprogramming, China’s biotech rise, the odd animals teaching us the most about longevity and, well, the prospects of living forever. We also get into Colville’s life and unusual rise as the longevity kingmaker, and, of course, we discuss keeping a human head alive without a body because what choice did we have.
