CONSPIRACY THEORY: Annabelle: The Warrens' Haunted Doll
October 19, 2026
AI Summary
5 min readIn the summer of 2025, the most famous haunted doll in the world went on tour. Her name was Annabelle. For half a century she had been locked in a glass case in a Connecticut basement behind a sign reading "Positively do not open." Now she was crossing the country like a headliner—huge crowds at an old prison in West Virginia, a psychic festival in Texas, sold-out tickets at about $50 for 30 minutes with her. Wherever Annabelle went, a man named Dan Rivera went with her. He was a 54-year-old veteran, father of four, and the senior investigator for the ghost hunting society that kept the doll. He took the job seriously: when the doll needed a new case, he had a priest bless him first, soaked his hands in holy water, pulled on welding gloves, and lifted her out. He said the temperature dropped 30 degrees. In July, the tour rolled into Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The day it opened, the state's entire 911 system went down. People wanted to know if the doll was responsible. Dan Rivera stood up and vouched for her: Annabelle didn't do it. The final event wrapped on Sunday, July 13th. That evening, Dan went back to his hotel. Sometime that night, he died. The internet needed less than a day to reach a verdict: Annabelle had finally killed a man.

Show Notes
In 1970, a nursing student in Connecticut was given a Raggedy Ann doll for her birthday. Within weeks she and her roommate believed it was moving around their apartment on its own, leaving handwritten notes, and attacking a friend. They called Ed and Lorraine Warren, the self-described demonologists who would later become the most famous paranormal investigators in America. The Warrens declared the doll haunted by a demonic presence, took it home, and sealed it in a glass case in their occult museum in Monroe, Connecticut. Fifty years later, a Hollywood franchise had made the doll a household name, the museum had been closed by zoning officials, and Annabelle was touring the country in front of paying crowds. In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson explores the young women whose story started it all, the investigators who built a career on it, and the strange afterlife of a child's toy that became one of the most feared objects in the world.
