5 min readThe Next War Will Be Fought by Robots
Mike LeBlanc, a former Marine captain who served in Afghanistan and later founded the security robotics company Cobalt, now runs a company building humanoid robots for both manufacturing and military applications. His central argument is straightforward: the United States has no choice but to develop armed robotic systems because adversaries will. The real question is not whether robots will fight, but how much human judgment remains in the loop—and what it does to the people on the other end of the joystick.
What Ukraine Revealed
LeBlanc visited the front lines in Ukraine and saw something that changed how he thinks about war. The battlefield is not a continuous line of trenches but a series of stronghold positions separated by open terrain. Above it all, drones with fiber-optic command wires—some seven kilometers long—provide persistent surveillance. The fields are covered in the cable, catching sunlight at certain angles. "I'm not sure why they have the humans there," LeBlanc says. "There's a big initiative to get all the humans off the front line."

Show Notes
Mike LeBlanc spent 13 years in the Marine Corps as an infantry officer. He deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 and went on to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion. After getting out he studied his way into Harvard Business School and co-founded Cobalt Robotics, a Sequoia-backed security robot company that put close to a thousand robots into offices on four continents before it sold. He now runs Foundation, which builds full-size humanoid robots for heavy industry and for the battlefield. His book, What If Anger Is the Answer, comes out November 3.
We start in Ukraine, where he has walked the front lines. Fiber-optic drones, isolated strongpoints, and a scoring system that awards points per kill. He argues most deaths on both sides now come from drones, and we work through what happens to a generation that kills through a screen.
