On the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, the host of Cleared Hot offers a measured reflection on how the nation has processed the attacks and the two decades of war that followed. Rather than delivering a prescribed tribute, he wrestles with an uncomfortable question: What does it mean to honor sacrifice without being trapped by it?
The host opens by acknowledging the anniversary but declines to dedicate the entire episode to it. He is wary of telling people how they should feel or think about the day. "That is not who I am," he says. Instead, he shares his own evolving perspective on memory, grief, and forward motion—a perspective shaped by having lived more than half his life in the post-9/11 era and by having his own trajectory radically altered by the events of that day.
The Natural Fading of Memory
One of the host's central observations is that collective memory inevitably softens over time. He notes that people are "naturally very good at forgetting how painful some things are," drawing a parallel to childbirth: if humans couldn't round the edges of physical and psychological pain, they would be unable to move forward as a species. This is not a dismissal of the attacks' significance but a recognition of psychological necessity.

Show Notes
This one airs on the 25th anniversary of September 11th. I'm not dedicating the whole episode to it. I don't tell people how to think or how to feel. But I do open with where I land on it now, a quarter century later, and why the reverence fading for people who didn't live it doesn't surprise me anymore.
Then the questions.
A 27-year-old learns through a DNA test that the man on his birth certificate isn't his father. He wants to know whether to tell the rest of the family.
A guy who has run audio at his church for 21 years wants to know how to finally ask to be paid without turning it into an ultimatum.
A future Naval Academy midshipman asks what a SEAL officer actually does on target, and whether the enlisted guys respect him.
Also covered: why we round the edges off pain as a species, what constant exposure to war footage does to a person, and why describing your own military service as vanilla needs to stop.
