The 300 Billion Euro Mistake: Why Germany’s Savings Are Going Nowhere

Germany exports roughly 300 billion euros in savings abroad every year—more than almost any other country. The problem? It invests that money terribly. According to research by Moritz Schularick and his colleagues at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, German foreign assets have consistently delivered far lower returns than those of comparable nations for decades. In this episode of bto – der Ökonomie-Podcast, host Daniel Stelter revisits a 2019 conversation with Schularick and updates the numbers to show that the situation has only worsened.

A Half-Century of Poor Returns

The central finding is stark: between 1975 and 2020, German foreign assets earned an average nominal return of just 4.89% per year. Among 13 advanced economies, Germany ranked 11th—only Finland and Portugal performed worse. Within the G7, Germany came dead last. The gap is especially painful when compared to the United States, where foreign investments returned roughly 5 percentage points more per year. Over 45 years, 100 euros invested at the German rate would grow to about 900 euros; the same sum invested at the American rate would become roughly 9,000 euros.

Show Notes

Was also tun?
