The most jaw-dropping detail from a new New York Times report on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth involves a meeting last year with top British defense officials. The United States had temporarily stopped sharing military intelligence with Ukraine, and the British indicated they had officers on the ground there—without U.S. intelligence, including early warnings of incoming Russian missiles, those officers' lives were at risk. But the British spoke only in general terms, a Trump administration official told the Times, because the presence of Mrs. Hegseth made them uneasy. Later, they held a smaller meeting without her to go into detail. As one host put it: "The Brits were so worried about this information leaking that they didn't raise it in a meeting with the SECDEF because his wife was there."

The report paints a picture of Jennifer Hegseth operating inside the Pentagon in ways that would be unthinkable in any normal administration. She was on the Signal chat about bombing targets in Yemen. She directed Pentagon staff on what videos to post of her husband's remarks, oversaw press and media affairs, and conspired about how to bar reporters from the briefing room. She also sat in on interviews for Pentagon positions. The Pentagon refuses to say whether she has a security clearance.
