When a pharaoh of Egypt's Sixth Dynasty lost his royal guard dog around 4,000 years ago, he did something extraordinary: he issued a formal royal decree ordering a state funeral for the dog, complete with fine linen wrappings, a coffin, a proper tomb in the Giza necropolis, and an inscription explaining that the honors were granted because the pharaoh loved him. The dog's name was Abutiu, and the inscription carved into stone is one of the earliest surviving records in human history of a person explicitly stating they loved a specific animal. This single story captures something essential about the partnership between humans and dogs—a relationship that has no parallel with any other domesticated animal.
