EP: 464 Dynasty of Slaves: Finding the Exodus in Ancient Egypt with BLK SHP Scott

AI Summary
5 min readIn the biblical account of the Exodus, the tenth plague is often imagined as the angel of death sweeping through Egypt, killing little children. But as BLK SHP Scott points out, the text never says that. It says the firstborn—the heads of households, the leaders of clans. “It's a military strategy,” he says, “assassination of the leaders of the clans.” That distinction matters, because it changes how we read the story and what we should look for in the archaeological record. Scott, who hosts Black Sheep Bible Talk and is finishing an MA in Biblical Studies, joins the Blurry Creatures hosts to argue that the Exodus is not a myth borrowed from older cultures, but a real historical event that has been hiding in plain sight—because scholars have been looking in the wrong century.

What you'll learn
- 1 (04:01) **Dynastic Egypt & The Missing Exodus** - Scott introduces the central problem: mainstream archaeology says there is no evidence for the Exodus, but he argues we have been looking in the wrong century.
- 2 (10:13) **Black Sheep Bible Talk & The Middle Earth Approach** - Scott explains his channel’s mission to make scholarly biblical history accessible through storytelling.
- 3 (17:05) **The Wrong Century: Why Ramesses II Fails** - The standard “Ramesses = Exodus” theory is debunked by Egypt’s own power and the Bible’s internal chronology.
- 4 (21:10) **The Pharaoh of 1446 BC: Amenhotep II** - The early Exodus date leads to a specific pharaoh whose physical and historical evidence matches the biblical account.
- 5 (24:09) **Setting the Stage: Abraham as Abisha** - The patriarchal story begins with a painting on a tomb wall from 1876 BC, identifying Abraham in the Egyptian record.
- 6 (41:33) **Joseph as King Salitis** - The biblical Joseph is identified in Egyptian history as the first Hyksos king, who rose to power through control of grain during a famine.
- 7 (47:59) **Archaeological Evidence in Goshen** - Physical evidence of a large Semitic population in the land of Goshen (Avaris) confirms the biblical account, despite academic suppression.

For a century, scholars have searched for the Exodus and found nothing. Scott from Black Sheep Bible Talk says they are looking in the wrong century, at the wrong pharaoh, for the wrong catastrophe. Move the lens two hundred years earlier, to 1446 BC, and the evidence starts clicking into place like a key in a lock. A pharaoh named Amenhotep II whose mummy is scarred with boils. A successor who was never the rightful heir and had to carve a monument explaining why he sits on the throne. A missing generation of firstborn sons. The story the Bible tells was never absent from the record. We were standing in the wrong room.
From there, Scott lays out a chain most people have never heard. A pharaoh who marches into Canaan and drags back the largest slave haul in Egyptian history, because he suddenly needs to refill cities that just emptied. A tomb painting at Beni Hassan of shepherds from the east that may put a face on Abraham himself. A governor named Salatis in Egypt's own king list who lines up name for name with Joseph. Nate and Luke go two hundred years deep with a guest who has spent years building the case, and by the end the Exodus looks less like myth and more like history hiding in plain sight.
