EP: 462 Werewolves, a White Pony, and a 100 Year Promise with Marcus Young

AI Summary
5 min readIn 1908, a group of Wa tribesmen from the mountains of China followed a white pony through the jungle for weeks. The pony stopped at a hole in the ground in Burma, where a white man in a white suit was digging a well. The man was William Marcus Young, a Baptist missionary who had been praying for sixteen years to win thousands of souls. The Wa had been waiting for him. Their prophets had sung ballads for nearly three hundred years about a white man with a white book who would bring the true God. When they found Young, they told him their prophecies, ate white rice with him for seven days, and begged him to come to their villages. He could not go—his children were too young—but he made a promise: if he could not come, his sons would. If his sons could not come, his grandsons would. And if his grandsons could not come, his great-grandsons would.

Show Notes
Marcus Young grows up in a family that hunts werewolves. This is not folklore, and it is not a campfire story. His great-uncle Harold empties both barrels of buckshot into a creature swaying on a log, and it screams, bleeds a river, and vanishes without a trace a mile and a half into the jungle. His grandfather keeps a matchbox of the hair as proof. Then one night the creatures come for Marcus. Two of them materialize in his bedroom, red eyes and long claws, and one turns to the other and asks whether they should take him now or wait.
The monsters are only the doorway. Marcus carries one of the most remarkable missionary lines in modern history, running four generations deep into the borderlands of Burma and China. A white pony leads twelve men through weeks of jungle to a well. A tribe waits three hundred years for a white man with a white book. A great-grandfather makes a promise that reaches across a century and lands on Marcus himself. And the same bloodline that hunts monsters now pulls children out of cartels and trafficking rings, where the evil is not blurry at all.
Today, Marcus runs InFire, the nonprofit he founded to rescue children from trafficking, cartels, and extreme poverty across Southeast Asia and Latin America, and you can check out and support the work at in-fire.org.
